The self-assessment

Based on Benwell’s (2020) concept, writing is the use of symbols that are part of an alphabet that forms a language and people use it to communicate ideas and thoughts.

Writing is a cultural element, regardless of the language we all have to communicate in some way, however, is an art that goes beyond establishing words, but it is necessary before having an effective reading that allows us to enrich the vocabulary and expand the thought so that in this way, whether in a professional, personal or entertainment environment we can express ourselves in the right way and above all that the message comes in the right way or what is expected.

Through this course, I have allowed myself to understand that writing is an element that requires more attention than we normally give it in our daily lives. This art is accompanied by research, a tool that in turn is composed of writing, analysis, evaluation, synthesis, summary, and citation of sources.

I believe that throughout this semester I have been able to greatly expand my knowledge of writing and its composition, studying in detail the small components that we can overlook in our daily lives.

As far as the objectives are concerned, it is necessary to mention that objective 1, which focuses on “recognizing the range of linguistic differences in oneself and others as resources and taking advantage of those resources to develop rhetorical sensitivity” helps to understand that we should not close ourselves to the different ideas that may come from third parties since from them, human beings can enrich their perspective throughout life, that is, from taking linguistic differences as a resource could be a useful factor in the professional and personal field. And I must say that this aspect has been of great advantage to me since it allows me to see the considerations of others as a resource of benefit and this is what leads me to the second objective, which determines “to improve the strategies of reading, writing, reviewing, editing and self-assessment” taking into account and understanding that we all have some learning resource to contribute to our knowledge. Reading is a key element since one should not read just for the sake of it, but from a careful and concentrated reading one will be able to obtain a better knowledge and understanding of any resource, which promotes excellent writing since from an effective reading, we acquire knowledge that helps us to express ourselves better, which finally allows us to be able to self-evaluate and have the ability to edit.

Then from a solid foundation of resource utilization and writing, we could then take skill in objective number 3 which refers to “Negotiate your own writing goals and audience expectations. Also, objective 4 and 5 which state “Develop and participate in the social and collaborative aspects of the writing process. And “participate in gender analysis and multimodal composition to explore effective writing in disciplinary contexts and beyond” to finally reach objective number 6 “formulate and articulate a position through and in your writing”. In other words, through a solid knowledge base, it is possible to use writing as a means of influence and social participation, based on the analysis and composition of effective writing to finally be able to issue a sufficiently solid position, which includes not only a personal perspective but also considers the different factors that have to do with some social discipline, so that in this way we can generate written pieces that truly communicate and are not just empty information. I have learned that based on taking into account the “whole” of a topic, I can broaden my knowledge by getting to know others, taking the good and discarding the bad, so that the opinion I express is as calibrated as possible, turning my opinions into informative, solid and truthful fragments.

Finally, objectives 7 and 8 refer to “Practice using various library resources, online databases, and the Internet to locate appropriate sources for your writing projects. And “Strengthen your practices of using sources (including evaluation, integration, citation, paraphrasing, summarizing, synthesizing, analyzing, and citing sources)” are elements that I used to know, however, today I have been able to appreciate and know differently, since research is the basis of all good writing since no one can give an opinion if they have not known the subject well, then it is the internet mostly the resource center in which if there is a lot of information there is also a lot of misinformation, so it is necessary to have a sufficiently developed capacity of analysis and an effective exercised reading that allows to consider what is necessary, in this world of writing we cannot let ourselves be carried away by the first source or news, it is necessary to consider “the whole” to determine a solid opinion. Also, I consider that what refers to the objective number 8 that covers the paraphrase, the summary, analysis, and integration, are activities, mental skills that only in practice can be improved but above all, they are activities that are evolving, is continuous learning, that is why I consider it is the area that I must strengthen and continue working.

In general terms, effective writing is accompanied by a multitude of elements, which we overlook in our daily lives, but once we have learned what they are about and what they refer to, these skills will help us in life itself, which is why I can say that through this semester I understood the importance of writing, the importance of listening and understanding the position of others to enrich my own and that the best thing for me to issue a position and above all be able to defend it is through optimal research, analysis, and consideration of all elements that make up a topic. While it is true that there are aspects that I must improve, such as analysis or summary, however, I am in favor of the fact that from the practice of reading and writing I will be able to improve in this art that will not only be useful in a professional way but all areas of my life, allowing me to communicate better and also that others communicate with me.
